Olive oil tourism in Sicily: Case Luparello on the regional list of olive oil tourism businesses

There are many ways to get to know Sicily. Some travel through it in search of art cities, some follow the aromas of traditional cooking, and others simply want to rediscover the silence of the countryside. We believe there is another path too, bringing together landscape, culture and flavour: discovering a place through its extra virgin olive oil.

At Case Luparello, olive trees are not a decorative feature but part of our farm’s history. We are therefore pleased to share an important milestone: Progresso Sud Società Agricola S.r.l., the agricultural company behind Case Luparello, appears on the regional list of businesses carrying out olive oil tourism activities in Sicily.

For us, registration is more than a title to display. It is an opportunity to tell a fuller story of our surroundings: the trees, the cycle of the seasons, agricultural work, the processing of olives and, of course, the experience of tasting. Because behind a bottle of oil there are always a place and people.

Case Luparello on the official list of the Sicilian Region

The regional list updated on 31 January 2026, approved by D.D.G. no. 496 of 4 February 2026, includes five businesses across Sicily, among them the agricultural company behind Case Luparello. This figure refers to that specific update date.

What is olive oil tourism, and why is it worth discovering?

The term may sound new, but it contains a very simple idea: getting to know a place through what it produces. Just as wine tourism brings us closer to the world of wine, olive oil tourism takes us among the olive trees and helps us understand where one of the fundamental ingredients of Mediterranean cooking comes from.

Under national rules, olive oil tourism includes activities to learn about olive oil in its places of production, visits to growing and production areas or displays of equipment, tastings, sales of the farm’s products, and educational or recreational initiatives linked to olive growing.

In less technical terms, it means looking at an olive tree and starting to ask questions. When do olives ripen? How does the harvest change from one year to another? What happens during extraction? Why are some oils delicate and others more intense? Above all, how do we learn to recognise what we are tasting?

Olive oil tourism offers a practical way to find these answers without turning the experience into a lesson reserved for experts.

At Case Luparello, everything begins with our olive grove

Our estate is set in an olive grove with over 1,000 trees planted around forty years ago. They are an integral part of the place: shaping the landscape, accompanying daily life and forming the most immediate link between our hospitality project and agricultural activity.

Every season changes its appearance. The light on the leaves, the colours of the fruit, the scent of the earth and the rhythms of work all change. The grove is not a backdrop prepared for guests: it is a working agricultural landscape that exists and changes independently of the tourist calendar.

Our olives produce Case Luparello extra virgin olive oil, obtained through cold mechanical extraction. Walking among the trees and knowing that these fruits produce the oil we can later taste changes our perspective: a familiar food finally acquires a visible, recognisable origin.

Olive oil tasting: an experience involving the senses

Almost all of us use oil every day, but we rarely pause to taste it on its own. We pour it over bread, vegetables, pasta or fish, often without asking what aromas and sensations it can offer.

Yet a few moments are enough to discover a rich and surprising sensory language. Fruitiness evokes the characteristic sensations of fresh olives; bitterness and pungency, when present, are positive attributes recognised in virgin olive oil tasting. They are not defects to avoid automatically, but elements that help define the product’s character.

The tasting experience teaches us to approach oil more attentively, recognise differences between sensory profiles and understand how flavours interact with the ingredients of Mediterranean cooking. Curiosity matters more than experience: there is no need to be a professional taster.

The experience is available by reservation; contact us to arrange availability and learn how it takes place.

This is part of the charm of olive oil tourism: after a tasting, a simple slice of bread with a drizzle of oil no longer seems merely a snack, but becomes a different way of perceiving flavours.

The countryside does not pose: the value of the seasons

The aspect of olive oil tourism closest to our philosophy is its authenticity. We want to welcome visitors without hiding the agricultural nature of the place or turning it into an artificial attraction.

The trees follow the seasons. The olives ripen according to nature’s rhythms. Work changes throughout the year, as do the opportunities to observe certain stages of the grove’s life up close. A spring visit and an experience during harvest time do not tell exactly the same story.

This is also why available activities can vary with the season, agricultural conditions and the organisation of the estate. We like to think of this variability as an essential part of encountering the Sicilian countryside, rather than a limitation.

From grove to table: the flavours of Sicily

Oil has an extraordinary quality: it allows us to move naturally from agriculture to gastronomy. In Sicily, where cooking is closely linked to local produce, this transition is particularly immediate.

A drizzle of extra virgin olive oil can enhance rustic bread, seasonal vegetables, pulse soups and many traditional Mediterranean dishes. It is an everyday ingredient, yet its personality can noticeably change the result of a preparation.

Tastings linked to typical local products also provide a starting point for talking about recipes, family habits and food culture. It is not only about understanding how oil is produced, but discovering why it holds such an important place in our cooking.

Olive oil tourism and a stay: two experiences in one place

One of the most enjoyable aspects of Case Luparello is that the agricultural experience can accompany a proper holiday. Our four apartments, Biancolilla, Moresca, Coratina and Carolea, are named after olive varieties and set amid the estate’s greenery.

Alongside the olive grove, another distinctive feature of the property is our infinity pool, designed for moments of outdoor relaxation. The pleasure of a day by the pool and a walk among the olive trees belong to the same landscape here.

You can start the morning immersed in the peace of the countryside, spend part of the day discovering the area and return to the comfort of your apartment in the evening. Or choose to slow down, giving more time to nature, flavours and the experiences available on the estate.

For those wishing to explore southeast Sicily, a stay also allows you to discover places such as Noto, Syracuse and Ortigia, Marzamemi and the Vendicari Nature Reserve, before returning to the quiet of our olive trees.

A regional list of five businesses, as of 31 January 2026

The inclusion of Progresso Sud Società Agricola S.r.l. on the regional olive oil tourism list has particular meaning for us. In the 31 January 2026 update, the list included five Sicilian businesses, located in the provinces of Agrigento, Catania, Messina, Syracuse and Trapani.

This number reflects an early stage in the administrative development of olive oil tourism on the island, especially when compared with the extent of Sicilian olive growing. The Region itself reports around 20 million olive trees across more than 158,000 hectares: an agricultural and landscape heritage of great importance.

For us, being on the list means participating in a way of enhancing agricultural activity that goes beyond selling the product, bringing visitors closer to the people, places and knowledge that make it possible.

An experience open to everyone’s curiosity

You do not need to know olive varieties, acidity parameters or extraction techniques to appreciate a tasting. Olive oil tourism can interest travelling couples, families with children, cooking enthusiasts or anyone who simply wants to spend time in nature.

Seeing a food’s place of origin up close changes how we regard it. After observing the trees and tasting an oil attentively, noticing its aromas, it becomes natural to ask new questions even about the bottles we buy every day.

This is what we would like visitors to take away: not a lesson to memorise, but curiosity to carry with them.

A memory to take home: our extra virgin olive oil

Some souvenirs end up on a shelf. A bottle of oil bought after getting to know its place of origin can instead become part of everyday life, bringing an experience back to mind through flavour.

This is why we believe in the production and direct sale of Case Luparello extra virgin olive oil. Knowing the origin of what we bring to the table and being able to speak with its producer makes a purchase more informed and personal.

If you would like to know the available sizes, the characteristics of the oil currently offered and how to purchase it, visit our extra virgin olive oil page or contact us directly.

Case Luparello: a Sicily to experience and taste

Registration on the regional olive oil tourism list does not change our identity. It allows us to tell an important part of our story more fully.

We remain a farm and a place of hospitality where olive trees, extra virgin olive oil, apartments, an infinity pool and nature coexist in the same space. Olive oil tourism offers another opportunity to share this heritage with those seeking a stay that goes beyond simply visiting places.

Because sometimes tasting an oil where it is made is enough to discover that a place can tell its story through flavour too.
